My First Day in Japan

Today was my first full day in Japan. I had a fairly restless sleep the night I got there, probably due to the time difference and jet lag. However, I forced myself to stay in bed until 6 AM. Then, I ate the bean bun I had bought the night before, which was very tasty. I also got some hot chocolate from the vending machine so I had a warm beverage. Then, I watched the sun rise and went for a walk with a bottle of hot green tea (again, from the vending machine).

This is the view across the lake from the sidewalk outside the academic building.

Here is the sidewalk. To the left is a Japanese-style garden outside the academic building.

I had wanted to bike to the grocery store later that day, but since it is the weekend and tomorrow (Monday) is a national holiday, the person who is in charge of the bikes isn't here. So I won't get a bike until Tuesday...  However, the grocery store is still in walking distance (a medium length walk). Since I don't have my cookbooks yet, I just got enough food to sustain me for a few days or until I finally get my luggage (hopefully tomorrow) and am able to make a week's menu and make an actual grocery list.

Today was really fun and relaxing...though I had a bout of jet laggy-ness early afternoon my time (which was later evening for my family and friends in the Midwest). I gave into that and took a short nap...though now after dinner, I am tired, though it is a more normal time to go to sleep (8:30).

Remember how my first evening I heard comments on my "white-ness"? Well, today won a prize. At the grocery, and elderly man (shopping with his wife) comes up to me and says, while pointing to his face, "Pretty white face! So white! So pretty!" So far, that has been my most interesting "gaijin" experience.

Well, I am going to go and put away the dinner things and clean up the kitchen a little...then I will probably head to bed. Tomorrow, I will get my luggage, officially move in, and then I will re-arrange the kitchen (the last people who lived in our room were a grossly messy...so everything is disorganized).

Have a wonderful day/evening and I hope to post again either tomorrow or Tuesday!
